Excellent Cleanability

Cross contamination can be a serious issue in microfluidics, particularly when working with biological media.  Thanks to their low dead volume designs, optimised flow paths and precision molding, Bürkert has ensured that their microvalves are easily cleanable. Utilizing a diaphragm to separate the media from the actuation mechanism, this valve maintains this commitment to cleanability.

 

Low Internal Volume

When material costs are high, they should be used more efficiently.   By minimizing the internal volume of their valves, Burkert not only improves their cleanability, but also facilitates the most efficient use of precious fluid resources.  This microvalve has a total internal volume of <70 µL, for applications in which liquid efficiency is key.

Low Heat Transfer to the Medium

By keeping the actuating solenoid and the fluid chamber separate in their microvalves, Bürkert minimizes the uncontrolled heat transfer into the fluid medium.  Additionally, low microvalve power consumption helps reduce heat production.

Rocker Valve Principle

Rocker microvalves are characterized by a pivoting "rocker" arm, which, when actuated by a solenoid, moves in one plane to open or close the microvalve.  A diaphragm between the rocker and the microvalve seats creates reliable separation of actuator and media and allows for excellent cleanability of the fluid chamber, making them particularly well suited for being used with biological media.  The small amount of moving mass and operation principle of the rocker microvalve construction facilitates a very long service life and secure seals of the microvalve seats even in the presence of high back pressure.  

 

    The schematics below demonstrate the power-off and power-on positions of a typical 3-way rocker microvalve.

    Microvalve Dosing Principles

    There are several dosing principles in microfluidics with which these microvalves can be very effectively implemented.  The following schematics outline the two most common dosing principles: time-pressure dosing and syringe pump dosing.

    Time-Pressure Dosing

    Time pressure dosing operates by using a pressure source to pressurize a fluid tank or reservoir.  The medium is then carried through a microvalve to a dosing needle with parameters such as tank pressure, flow resistance, medium viscosity and temperature being controlled.  The flow of medium can be controlled by simply controlling the amount of time for which the microvalve is open.  This dosing method is highly accurate and repeatable, and as the medium is driven by air pressure instead of a pumping mechanism, it does away with mechanical parts in the fluid stream and can contribute to system longevity.

     

     

    Syringe Pump Dosing

    In syringe pump dosing with a 3/2-way microvalve, fluid medium can be taken through suction from a reservoir into a syringe and then pumped through a dispensing needle once the microvalve have changed its position.  In this way it is possible to dispense small, and precise volumes of fluid.  System cleaning can be done in an analogous method.

     

    A simple 2/2-way microvalve can also be used to facilitate air isolated syringe pump dosing, in which the dispensed fluid comes into contact with only the dispensing tip, not the microvalve or pumping mechanism, as shown in the schematic below.  This can be an important method in applications needing to highly control the risk of contamination.
